What to Do When Unemployed: How to Use Government Support

If your EI benefits run out (maximum duration is between 14 and 45 weeks, depending on the regional unemployment rate), you may be eligible for social assistance through your provincial government. This is last-resort financial help to cover basic needs like housing, food, and utilities.

Never be ashamed to apply for these supports. You’ve paid into the system through your taxes and EI premiums. It’s your right, not charity.

Many people find new jobs through connections made in training courses or through short-term placements arranged by employment agencies that work with the government. Some employers specifically hire from these programs because they know the candidates are motivated.

Important: maintain a routine. Unemployment can be tough mentally. Get outside, stay active, and keep in touch with people. And most importantly – don’t wait for something to “come along.” Be proactive.

In Canada, unemployment is not a stain on your character. It’s a phase. And the system is there to help you through it – if you take the first step.
