Family Benefits, Allowances, and Support for Parents

Sixth: the Child Disability Benefit (CDB). An additional tax-free benefit for families caring for a child under 18 who is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. It’s paid monthly along with the CCB.

Seventh: the Canada Learning Bond (CLB). The government deposits money into a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) for children from low-income families, even if no one contributes to the RESP. No personal contribution is needed.

Eighth: tax credits for single parents. Single parents may be eligible for various tax credits and benefits, including a higher amount under the GST credit and certain provincial programs.

Ninth: support for children with disabilities. Beyond the CDB, there are provincial programs and the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) itself, which can open the door to other federal programs like the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), which offers grants and bonds to help save for the future.

Tenth: municipal and community programs. Many cities offer free or subsidized recreation programs, library passes, and summer camps for families with lower incomes. It’s worth checking with your local municipal or community centre.

In Canada, you are not alone. The system is designed with the idea that raising children is a shared societal responsibility. The support is there to help families thrive.
